Industry Leading Safety Performance for Acura Line-Up

Acura has taken a safety leadership position as the only automotive brand to earn a 5-star Overall Vehicle Score in the NHTSA New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) and a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) across its entire model line (1). Based on the brand’s commitment to the latest safety design and implementation of advanced safety and driver-assistive technology, Acura earned top overall safety ratings from the U.S. government and the IIHS across its model line.  See the line-up at:

“At Acura, safety has been a part of our engineering culture and DNA since the inception of the brand nearly 30 years ago, something affirmed by these industry-leading safety ratings,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager, Acura division.

This is the second time in Acura history that the brand has achieved industry-leading safety status by earning the highest available ratings from both NHTSA and IIHS at the same time across in its lineup. In 2009, Acura was the first brand ever to simultaneously earn top safety ratings from NHTSA and IIHS across the model lineup. Additionally, Acura was the first automotive brand to introduce advanced driver-assistive technology to the luxury market by offering autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with the introduction of its Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) on the 2006 Acura RL.

“Building upon the robust ACE™ body structure, we have achieved a new level of occupant protection and with AcuraWatch™ we help the driver mitigate, and at times avoid, collisions,” said Chuck Thomas, chief engineer automotive safety, Honda R&D Americas, Inc. “Looking ahead, our research in advanced automated driving technology has the potential to help realize our dream of a collision-free mobile society, perhaps within the next few decades.”

Acura safety leadership is further highlighted by the fact that the brand is the only automaker to offer all three advanced technology features (Front Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Rearview Camera) recommended by the NHTSA on all of its models, delivered in the AcuraWatch™ suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies (2). Additionally, Acura is the only brand in the industry to receive the top rating of “Superior” across its model line1 for its front crash prevention technology.

Acura Becomes First Luxury Brand to Earn 2015 Top Safety Pick+ for entire lineup from IIHS

Acura Becomes First Luxury Brand to Earn 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+ Rating Across its Entire Model Line from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TORRANCE, Calif. - 9/30/2015
  • 2016 ILX and RDX are the latest Acura vehicles to earn a TOP SAFETY PICK+ from the IIHS
  • Acura is the first luxury brand to earn the top designation across its entire model line
  • AcuraWatch™ suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies available across the entire Acura lineup
Acura has become the first luxury brand to earn a 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating for its entire model line from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS announced today that the significantly refreshed 2016 ILX and 2016 RDX have each received a 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating, when equipped with AcuraWatch™, resulting in the entire Acura lineup of luxury sedans and SUVs earning the safety distinction.

"As the first luxury brand to earn the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating across its entire model line, Acura continues to champion safety performance as a key luxury attribute," said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager for the Acura Division. "Acura has made the commitment to offer advanced safety performance technologies across our entire lineup, helping all Acura luxury sedans and SUVs earn the top safety rating from IIHS."

The TOP SAFETY PICK+ ratings for the 2016 Acura ILX and RDX include a top rating of GOOD in all IIHS crash test modes, including a top score of GOOD in the Insurance Institute's new small overlap front crash test and a top score of SUPERIOR in its front crash protection test.
"We commend Acura for receiving the highest IIHS award designation for all of its vehicles," said David Zuby, executive vice president and senior research officer for IIHS. "With qualifying crashworthiness ratings, including in the rigorous front small overlap crash test, and an effective front crash prevention system available across the lineup, Acura is one of the leaders in the luxury segment."

With both models receiving significant enhancements for 2016, the Acura ILX and RDX boast more advanced safety technology than ever before. The AcuraWatch™ suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies is now available on all Acura models and is standard on the 2016 RDX Advance package and 2016 ILX Tech Plus package. AcuraWatch™ can help improve the driver's situational awareness and, in certain circumstances, intervene to help avoid a collision or mitigate its severity.

AcuraWatch™ includes features like Collision Mitigation Braking System™ with Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist System, Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Departure Warning (LDW). These systems benefit from the adoption of a sensor fusion technology integrating the capabilities of a windshield-mounted monocular camera and front grille-mounted millimeter wave radar system to provide enhanced sensing with the ability to identify and anticipate multiple collision scenarios, including those involving a pedestrian. When the system anticipates a collision or road departure, it can initiate warnings and, in certain instances, initiate emergency braking and steering.

To further improve frontal collision performance, the 2016 Acura ILX and RDX offer enhanced crash safety design with numerous changes to its next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. The next-generation ACE™ design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to help distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle, enhancing occupant protection and crash compatibility in front collisions.

"It means a lot to us to be able to make such a large donation to BCH, knowing that it will help patients and their families from all over," said Dick Argys. "We are proud to continue our partnership with the hospital and go for one million dollars."

To begin the festivities, representatives from the NEADA gathered at BCH for a meet and greet with Dick Argys, BCH chief admin. officer, who delivered a brief speech with Chis Connolly, president of the NEADA. Afterward, the representatives spent time doing crafts with patients and touring Zebrafish lab.

“Boston Children’s Hospital is a great institution delivering miracles daily. There isn’t a better organization to support,” said Chris Connolly, NEADA President and general manager at Herb Connolly Acura.

NEADA will also continue to serve as a top-level sponsor at all signature fundraisers benefiting the hospital including the recent Champions for Children’s event on Dec. 2, where NEADA raffled off an all-new 2015 AcuraTLX that was on display during the event. The proceeds of the raffle went toward the nearly $4 million raised for Boston Children’s that evening. During the past two holiday seasons, the dealers also donated 10 percent of their customers’ service or repair bills and raised an additional $50,000.

Starting January 2015, the New England Acura Dealers Association extended their initial Nov. 2012 pledge of $500,000 over two years to one million dollars over four-years for Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH).

Additional NEADA donation to the Boston Children's Hospital

The New England Acura Dealers Donate Additional $25,000 to Boston Children’s Hospital

For the second consecutive year, Sunnyside Acura in Nashua, NH a part of the New England Acura Dealers Association (NEADA) presented Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) with a check for an additional $25,000 donation, thanks to the help of their loyal service customers.

From Dec. 2, 2014 to the end of 2014, the NEADA donated 10 percent from every customer’s service bill to BCH. The NEADA also matched 10 percent of customers’ service bills with a donation to BCH. The additional donation comes after the association’s recent announcement to extend their initial Nov.-2012 pledge of support to donate $500,000 to BCH over a two-year span to $1 million over a four-year span.

“The New England Acura Dealers take great pride in knowing that the relationships we have built with Boston Children’s Hospital, our Acura clientele and the community have made a positive impact in the sales and service departments,” said Brandt De Jonge, district parts and service manager for Acura in New England. “The Acura service experience is second to none and we are so pleased with this year’s response. Matthew Q. Phillips, Acura division, senior district sales manager – District 5A, echoed this sentiment with, “after meeting the dedicated hospital staff and the resilient kids and families, it reminded us all that we need to spend more time using what we have to help others.”
De Jonge and Phillips, along with the seven service managers from each of the NEADA’s dealerships, presented BCH with the $25,000 check on Jan. 23.

The holiday service donation initiative began on Giving Tuesday – the Tuesday after Thanksgiving – with the NEADA donating a large shipment of teddy bears to the hospital and dealership representatives hosting a kid’s arts and crafts session at BCH. Last year the dealers raised $25,000 in addition to their $500,000 commitment. The initiative also came on the heels of the annual Champions for Children’s event, an all-star fundraiser featuring NEADA representatives alongside Boston’s business leaders and sports teams—the Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and New England Revolution.

The NEADA’s ongoing support of BCH began with their pledge in November 2012. The donation, which is raised from a portion of the proceeds of every Acura sold, goes toward the Children’s Fund, an unrestricted fund that supports the hospital’s areas of greatest need.
